Newlands School is owned by the Beaconhouse Education Group and opened in the Al Warqa community of Dubai in 2017.
The school follows the national curriculum of England and is licensed in Dubai to operate from FS1 to year 6 currently, expanding to secondary and sixth form in later years. The school has a total capacity of 1100 students.
To equip Newlands School, SBS Education supported the pre-operations project, providing ICT procurement, installations and project management services prior to opening. The project was completed effectively and efficiently using our phased approach to New School Projects.
SBS Education believes strongly that ICT is the ‘5th Utility’ in the development of new schools. Alongside electricity, gas, water and telephone systems, schools should expect ICT systems to be just as well-integrated and reliable. ICT is also a utility that directly impacts teaching and learning.

Phase 1: Site Survey
At an early stage in the school’s pre-operations project, the SBS team carried out a detailed site survey to map out the requirements of the architecture and ensure its ICT delivers world-class connectivity from its opening and for years to come.
A typical survey factors in a day in the life of students and staff in the school to ensure that the ICT Strategy and the practical solutions provided are equally as fitted to the curriculum and school ethos as they are to the architect’s vision of the premises.
With a range of teaching spaces, communal areas and specialist activity facilities, the school boasts the following:
- 42 standard classrooms
- Specialist art, media and music rooms
- A Special Needs base and resource centre
- 4 science labs with 3 of them as specialist labs (for secondary physics, chemistry and biology) and 1 general lab for primary
- a multi-purpose hall
- a 10×20 metre swimming pool with changing facilities plus outdoor football pitch and cricket net
- 1 library/learning centre and a staff development/training centre
- External play spaces of more than 1,100 sqm including separate areas for KG, primary and secondary

Phase 2: Plan and Budget
A complete plan was devised to provide a robust foundation to the school’s ICT, prior to the procurement of technology. The detailed plan would facilitate the day-to-day log and updates for the SBS ICT team and the school’s operators during the implementation phase.
To find the most efficient purchasing solution for all items we provided evidence of cost reckoning for each project item.

Using our depth of knowledge we provided impartial advice on the equipment to suit the school’s current and future needs.
The equipment procurement included classroom
technologies such as iPads and interactive touchscreens
Phase 4: Implementation
The installations were completed with a daily log and update. The school was kept up to date throughout all stages of the project.
The SBS ICT consultant was supported by our wider technical team to complete the many stages of the project in time for opening.
Signficant aspects of the setup included:
